“I can’t believe my Year 6 sports shirt still fits me!’ exclaimed Mrs Preston
There is excitement in the air… and it’s only day one of Catholic Schools Week at Our Lady Queen of Peace, Greystanes 2018! All eight hundred students, teachers and over two hundred parents came together in prayer and celebration. Families also took a journey through Year 6 learning spaces using their ‘digital passports and special visitors were invited to talk to students about our Project Based Learning (PBL).
The theme for the week was ‘every learner, every day, transforming lives.’
On Monday, 5th March, starting with the Catholic Schools Week liturgy, the theme came to life before our very eyes as it was revealed that four of our current teachers’ lives were transformed as a result of coming to this school. Mrs Holahan (Reading recovery teacher) Mrs Preston (RFF teacher), Mrs Buhagiar (Year 5 teacher) and Miss Cassar (Year 6 teacher) are all ex-students of OLQP – the same school they now teach at.
“I can’t believe my Year 6 sports shirt still fits me!’ exclaimed Mrs Preston, seen in the photo proudly wearing her white and blue sports shirt from 1994.
Mr Hopley concluded the special morning assembly, by telling us that “Catholic schools week is a time to give thanks for our teachers and share thoughts about what it means to be part of Our Lady Queen of Peace – our wonderful Catholic school community.”
Catholic Schools Week at Our Lady Queen of Peace is quite an enjoyable event for everyone as families and friends are given the opportunity to explore learning spaces around the school and see transformation of learning in action.
“My mummy and daddy are going to be there. And I can’t wait to show them how to use a shelf card in the library!” a Year 3 student excitedly told us.
The classrooms were a buzz with joy, as parents and carers stepped back in time and participated in a variety of learning activities (in and out of class) with their darling daughters and special sons. Year 6 showed off their ICT skills and challenged parents to complete tasks listed on their ‘digital passport’ and spent time browsing through students’ digital folders, spacious classrooms and, of course, have a chat with other proud parents.
“I loved being able to see my daughter’s work on display!” said a proud parent.
Others were utterly gobsmacked with their child’s use of technology.
Throughout the week, there were more than just parents who visited. We felt very priveldged to be given the opportunity to speak to Mr Mark Rix, Head of Media CEDP, who spent the afternoon session talking to students about how they can best promote their great school, as part of PBL. He explained that there are many ways Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP) use to promote and advertise schools, including big posters on billboards to publishing interesting articles. By the end of the visit, Year 6 had many intersting ideas, which would definitely help PBL groups and ‘Perfect Promotions’, their final multi-modal presentation.
“Mr Rix was great as he gave us a lot of tips about how we can best promote our school. I really enjoyed his talk!” said an inspired 6M writer.
‘Every learner, every day, transforming lives.’
Well done students, teachers and parents of Our Lady Queen of Peace. You really are transforming lives - especially during Catholic Schools Week!

Today in our Little Disciples lunchtime group, we spoke about how God is always with us and takes away our worries when we place our trust in Him. Students made paper boats, wrote their worries on them, and placed them into the water to sail away as a reminder that we can give all our fears and worries to God. ⛵ “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:704 May 2026
