The students and families of Our Lady Queen of Peace School, Greystanes, have rallied together to support the recent victims of Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu.

Led by Year Five teacher Mrs Melinda Parker, the school donated nearly 5000 shirts to a clothing driving organised by local charity "Givhans" in Horsley Park.

Students from Year Five advertised and then organised the clothing drive. Families were asked to donate new or 'as new' T-shirts on Thursday, March 19th. The response from the school community was overwhelming.

I aimed at what I thought was high - for 1000 t-shirts school wide... but yesterday Year 5 children folded, counted, bagged and helped move 4687 t-shirts! It was humbling watching those who happily gave up their recess and lunchtime to help out as it went on throughout the afternoon. It sure was a hive of activity in 5P!

That afternoon a convoy of teachers then drove the many bags of clothing down to the charity in Horsley Park.

'Givhans' is an Australian interpretation of Bislama, one of the three official languages of Vanuatu. It means 'Helping Hands'.

They are a group who aim to help hospitals, aid stations, villages, special needs groups and libraries in Vanuatu.

🐣✨ What a sweet success! ✨🐣 Our OLQP Easter Showbag Fundraiser was an egg-stra special hit! 💛 With so many smiling faces and excited little hands, it was wonderful to see our students enjoying their colourful showbags filled with treats. Thanks to the incredible support of our school community, we raised an amazing $1,873! 🙌🎉 Every dollar goes back into supporting our students and creating more opportunities for them. A big thank you to all the families who ordered, and our volunteers who helped organise everything🐰💐

Yesterday, Taleishah from CSPD Jarara Cultural Centre visited OLQP to yarn with some of our students. The students explored the origins of their indigenous ancestral country and family. We look forward to learning more about the Aboriginal Australian perspective alongside our Indigenous families, who are eager to share their culture with our school community.
