Earlier this month, some 20 teachers and students from Nanzan Catholic High School in Nagoya, Japan visited us and brought with them their friendship, culture and joy that we could all share. Inevitably, the visit would not have been possible without everyone’s help. So for their fifth visit, a big thank you from me to you all.
This year the weather was very kind to us and that allowed us to have a great assembly together. Now the annual Nanzan visit might be over but students are still talking about how much they miss those wonderful students. Here are some of their reflections:
I liked when we coloured in the Totoro (Japanese anime character). I also liked when I got to sing. It was fun when the Japanese people did a dance.
Sienna N., 3R
I am Sasha and the Japanese assembly allowed me to sing in front of the school which I enjoyed. The Japanese girls had amazing voices. I liked taking selfies with them.
Sasha 3R
I am Mia Gauci from 3R. My favourite parts of the Japanese assembly are:
when I got to perform!
When the Year 5 people danced;
when the Japanese girls sang and danced; and
when they were interviewed by us.
Mia G., 3R
What I liked about the show is when the Japanese people sang.
I liked how we all made the posters and how sensei let the five of us sing.
Joseph E., 3R
When the Japanese girls came, I felt happy and excited. I like how they were singing the Frozen song and dancing an amazing dance. When they did the dance, I wondered how they did it. It was terrific and I wish they could come again this year.
Christina N., 4G
When the Japanese girls came and I was singing, I felt nervous and proud at the same time. Also, when the girls danced, I thought they were very traditional. They were very good singers to me because I liked how they performed. I thought they were very nice and smart.
Antoni L., 4G
The day the Japanese girls came, I felt a bit nervous because I had to perform two times in front of everyone but I also felt excited. I hugged all of them and I also took two of the Japanese girls to Year 2. I think it was a really fun assembly.
Amal F., 5B
I thought the Nanzan visit was a great experience for both the Nanzan girls and us. It was great fun watching the Nanzan girls and our students perform. A lot of amazing thought and effort went into that special day. A special thanks to sensei who organized the visit. Hopefully next year they will visit us again.
Christopher H., 5D
The day the Japanese girls and their senseis came, I was very excited. I couldn’t wait to show the girls around. Once I got assigned to two girls, I took them to Year 1, Kindergarten and Year 3. At the assembly, I performed twice. I enjoyed the day and can’t wait till next year.
Lara D., 5S
Konnichiwa, my name is Jacinta and the Nanzan visit was so much fun. I loved the songs we prepared. However, we were not there to see them perform as we had an excursion that day. I look forward to seeing them next year.
Jacinta E., 5P
When the Japanese girls came, I was really excited and showing their teachers around he school was a great experience. I hope they will come again soon!
Sinead B., 5S
I had the best opportunity to meet the Nanzan girls. We got to speak Japanese to the school and we showed them around the classrooms. We took lots of photos and we even played soccer together. The girls had planned a dance for us and they sang, “Let It Go”. Charlotte Duff and I had the opportunity to wear a Kimono. I am pretty sure that everyone had a great day.
Ivana R., 6M
I found the Nanzan visit fun, interesting and exciting. I really enjoyed taking the Nanzan teachers to Kindy, Y1, Y2, Y3 and the library. It was fun talking selfies, talking and collecting stickers from the Nanzan girls and I enjoyed my speech and lunch with four of the girls.
Giovanni B., 6K
The visit from the Nanzan girls was exquisite. The atmosphere was so intense and everyone had a really good time. The Japanese culture is very interesting and I loved how the girls sang, “Let It Go”. I think our Year 5 girls’ performances were cool. At the end of the day, everyone had a great time. I really loved the Japanese assembly and I hope you did too.

This was a reflective and meaningful experience where the year 3 students walked through the story of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Garden of Gethsemane was a place of great importance to Jesus, referred to in all four Gospels as a place where Christ retreated into deep prayer and a time of agony before His arrest and crucifixion.
